Silver Engagement Rings
Silver has been used for centuries as a medium for rings of all kinds. In Georgian and Victorian times silver was used as a setting for diamonds with gold being used to back the silver. Silver is a soft metal which helps the jeweller in setting stones.
Silver has been mined for centuries and is one of the oldest metals to be used by man.
Different countries use various purifies of silver. In the UK sterling silver is the norm with
.925 (92.5%) parts of pure silver. The word silver comes from the ancient Greek word meaning white or shining. As silverside mined all over the world it is easily accessible to jewellers.
Although many jewellers may guide customers away from using silver as an engagement ring due to the softness of the metal, this is really quite unfounded as the early jewellers used silver to set stones. Many of Hesse survive until today proving that silver is a good medium.
With the recent cost of gold rocketing in price many people are looking at alternative metals for their engagement rings and silver is one of the main alternatives. In times past many jewellers used silver to practice their designs as the cost was much cheaper, but in modern times silver has become very fashionable as jewellery in its own right.
Platinum became a popular choice for engagement and wedding rings but as the price soured more looked to silver which to the untrained eye can look the same. Many jewellers stores now stock mainly silver jewellery which is more affordable but with the same look as white gold or platinum.
With the advent of man made or lab created gems such as cubic zirconia many jewellers are using these along with silver to create stunning designs that mirror some of the more exclusive designer rings found in the expensive stores.
